Our reason for being
Patagonia began as a small company manufacturing tools for climbers. Mountaineering remains at the heart of a global business that still produces clothing for climbing, as well as for skiing, snowboarding, surfing, fly fishing, mountain biking, and trail running. These are all quiet sports. None require a motor, and they rarely reward you with the cheers of a crowd. In each, the reward takes the form of effort and moments of connection with nature.
For us, our love for these wild and beautiful places demands active participation in the fight to save them and help reverse the accelerating decline in our planet's health. We donate our time, services, and at least 1% of our sales to hundreds of environmental organizations worldwide working to reverse this situation.
Staying true to our core values for over forty years has helped us build a company we are proud to lead and proud to work for. To stay in business for at least another forty years, we must protect this planet we call home.

Our values reflect those of a business started by a group of climbers and surfers, and the minimalist style they championed. Our approach to product design reflects a trend toward simplicity and utility.
To manufacture the best product
Our criteria for the best product are based on functionality, repairability, and above all, durability. One of the most direct ways we can limit our environmental impact is by creating products that last for generations or that can be recycled, so their materials remain in use. Making the best product matters to save the planet.
Avoid causing unnecessary impact
We know that our business activities, from lighting stores to dyeing shirts, are part of the problem. We are constantly working to change our business practices and share what we have learned. But we recognize that this is not enough. We seek not only to reduce negative impacts but also to increase positive ones.
Using business to protect nature
The challenges we face as a society require leadership. Once we identify a problem, we act. We embrace risk and act to protect and restore the stability, integrity, and beauty of the web of life.
