In the southeasternmost part of Argentina, in the Province of Tierra del Fuego, where the American continent ends and the Andes Mountains meet the sea, lies the Mitre Peninsula, one of the few places that have resisted the encroachment of humanity, maintaining its landscapes largely unaltered and pristine. After more than 30 years of constant struggle by the people of Tierra del Fuego, this unique area was declared a Provincial Protected Natural Area in December 2022.
Why protect it
The need to protect this area arose in 1984, when the first expedition to the Peninsula was undertaken. Since then, various bills have been introduced for this purpose. On December 6, 2022, the government of the Province of Tierra del Fuego and the legislature approved the bill protecting the Mitre Peninsula, declaring it a Provincial Protected Natural Area. An area encompassing approximately 300,000 hectares of land and 200,000 hectares of sea, including the waters surrounding Isla de los Estados, will be permanently protected. This habitat is one of the largest wetlands in Argentina and a key player in the environment, as it contains 84% of the country's peatlands—one of the best-preserved peat expanses in South America—and, by integrating different ecosystems, is home to a great diversity of species. Furthermore, it boasts the highest concentration of kelp forests in the province.
