Rosa mutabilis

Old garden rose

This rose was gifted by Prince Borromeo to the Swiss botanist Henri Correvon in 1894. It grew in the gardens of the Borromeo family villa on Isola Bella, Lake Maggiore. It is unknown when or how this rose arrived there, but it was already known in the area as 'Tipo Ideale'. It is a hybrid of R. chinensis, the origin of which is unknown. It received the name Mutabilis due to its unique characteristic of changing color from the moment the flower opens, beginning as a pale yellow tinged with orange, and, as it matures, transforming throughout the day to a crimson hue.

Flowering: It blooms repeatedly from spring, throughout summer and autumn, until the first frosts. Its flowers are simple, with 5 delicate and showy petals. Its foliage consists of oval, pointed leaves, typical of Chinese varieties.

Varieties at Casa Frey: This is a very vigorous plant in warm climates. In Bariloche, it grows in the garden of Casa Frey, in a location favored by its sunshine and proximity to the lake. This location has allowed it to thrive, making it a truly admirable specimen.

This rose was gifted by Prince Borromeo to the Swiss botanist Henri Correvon in 1894. It grew in the gardens of the villa owned by the Borromeo family in Isola Bella, Lake Maggiore. It is unknown when or how this rose arrived there, but it was already known in the area as 'Tipo Ideale'. It is a hybrid of R. chinensis, although no references exist on its origin.

It received the name 'Mutabilis' due to its characteristic of changing color from the opening of the flower, from a faint yellow tinged with orange, to a crimson hue as it matures during the day.

It is a very vigorous plant in warm climates; here in Bariloche, it is found in the Frey estate garden, in a sunny spot near the lake, which has allowed it to develop wonderfully, making it an admirable specimen.

It blooms repeatedly from spring through the summer and into the autumn, until the first frost. Its flowers are simple, with five delicate and striking petals. Its foliage consists of oval, acuminate leaves, typical of the Chinese varieties.
